Nicasio History

The Coast Miwok Indians were the original inhabitants of the land. Located in Marin County, California, Rancho Nicasio once stretched from San Geronimo to Tomales Bay. Once part of a Mexican Land Grant, in 1844 Rancho Nicasio was granted to Pablo de la Guerra and John B.R. Cooper.

Nicasio was founded in the early 19th century to support local agricultural, timber, and fishing activities. Much of the land today is used for agricultural purposes including beef and dairy cattle grazing, small-scale vineyards & organic farming. The Marin agricultural Land Trust protects much of the land in the valley from development.

Centrally located in this area is the small village of Nicasio itself. The town center has a post office, general store, a tiny real estate office, Druid’s Hall, St. Mary’s Church (established in 1867), Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department, a baseball field located in the town square, and Rancho Nicasio (founded in 1941)  a renowned bar/restaurant/live music establishment where musicians such as Van Morrison, Jerry Garcia and Rodney Crowell have performed.
